My name is Mariza Neiada and I am a music therapist from Athens, Greece currently working with Afghan refugees in the Malakasa camp with the organization Connect by Music. My aim is to visit the Kenya Arts and Music volunteer project and offer music therapy services to children and youth who are abused and under stress in Kenya, Africa. I strongly feel that this project is the next step in my professional life and will allow me to not only grow as a person, but to also help a community in need.

Music Therapy is an evidence-based practice, in which music is utilized in a therapeutic manner to serve client goals. For example, scientific evidence has shown that active engagement in music activities, such as instrument playing, can enhance wellness, relieve stress symptoms, alleviate pain, maintain and improve memory skills and aid in the expression of emotions. Also research has shown that music can access key areas of the brain and activate regions that may be damaged or traumatized.

The Kenya Arts and Music Volunteer Project is supported by the organization Go Volunteer Africa and its aim is to provide music, dance and drama to a community with great needs in Kakamega and Nairobi, Kenya. The purpose of the project is to work with children and youth who are abused and under stress and enhance their creativity through the arts, while immersing in the diverse East African culture.

As an individual and as a professional, it has always been my passion to help people through the power of music. Africa is a destination unknown to me and its music and arts culture is something that I have not experienced yet. I am excited to learn from this opportunity! I believe that my knowledge and expertise as a music therapist that has been working with children and their families for 10 years may be valuable to the East African community.

Thank you for your support!
